KATHMANDU, Nov 4 - The special session of the interim parliament has passed the amendment proposal tabled by the CPN-UML after the CPN-Maoist and a few fringe left parties supported the proposals.

Maoist leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara and leaders of some fringe left parties said that they have decided to withdraw its motions and support the “joint motion” filed by the UML.

The amendment proposal tabled by the UML’s Ishwor Pokharel and Raghuji Panta seeks the Interim Legislature-Parliament’s directive to the government to immediately determine all necessary procedures to proclaim the country a republic and to take concrete steps in this regard.

The proposal also seeks a new date for the CA elections after finding out the reason as to why the election could not be held on the previous dates.

Before the voting, NC lawmaker Mahesh Acharya stood up and asked the parties to avert voting on the motions and strive for the politics of agreement. He urged them to support the NC proposal to declare the country a republic and endorse the declaration through the first sitting of the elected CA.

However, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party’s amendment proposal tabled by lawmaker Sunil Prajapati seeking a socialist republic was quashed by the House.

Nepal Sadbhavana Party-Anandi Devi lawmaker Hridayesh Tripathy said that though his party supports both the motions tabled by the Maoists, it has decided to boycott the voting on the motions.

“Politics of agreement is the need of the hour,” he said.

CPN-ML lawmaker CP Mainali also said his party has decided to abstain from voting on any of the motions to stress on the unity between the parties.
