Maoists withdraw republic motion; House passes UML’s amendment motion (7:52 pm)

The CPN (Maoist) has withdrawn its proposal on republic and has voted in favour of the amendment proposal filed by the CPN (UML).

Speaking at the sitting of the legislature parliament this evening, Maoist spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara said his party had decided to withdraw its proposal and vote for UML’s amendment proposal on republic.

The House passed the UML’s amendment motion by a simple majority. The UML motion seeks announcement of republic from the House and start procedure for the implementation of republican order at the earliest.

Two fringe communist parties - Rastriya Janamorcha Nepal and CPN (Marxist Leninist) - didn’t participate in the voting pledging neutrality while the Nepali Congress voted against the motion.

The House is to vote on the Maoist proposal on fully proportional election system shortly.
