Kishunji urges all to rise above party interests

The only living founding member of the Nepali Congress, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, has said national sovereignty is at stake and urged all, including the Maoists, to rise above the party interests to work for safeguarding the national integrity.

During a meeting with the reporters at his residence at Bhaisepati Monday afternoon, Bhattarai said the leaders and the parties must come together at this critical situation.

He said it is time for handing over the leadership to the younger generation and requested all to work to this direction adding that a new leadership was necessary in newer circumstances.

He also vowed to advocate for handing over the nation's responsibilities to young leaders who understands the needs and feeling of this generation.

Bhattarai said he will attend the first sitting of the special session of the interim parliament this Thursday.

He stressed on the relevance of monarchy for national integrity and sovereignty but clearly in a ceremonial roles making commitments to protect the people's power and democracy.

Earlier, soon after the Nepali Congress Mahasamiti decided to go for a democratic republic, Bhattarai termed it as a diversion from the principles of BP Koirala and Ganesh Man Singh and severed all ties with the NC.

Bhattarai also rejected the possibility of a military coup by the king or any other groups at this period.
