Piero Paci, who turns 90 on October 6, reached the top of the Gran Sasso of Abruzzo, an altitude of 2,914 metres (9,560 feet), Ansa agency said. He opted not to make the climb on his birthday because he would have had to deal with snow. Paci, from Pesaro in central-eastern Italy, was accompanied on the climb by his son and a group of friends.
