Rocker Rants Against Summer Of Love's 'Stoned, Dirty, Stinky Hippies' Right-wing Republican rock star/ polemicist Ted Nugent launched a vitriolic tirade against 'burned-out hippies' celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love this week, and dubbed the counter-culture era 'the Summer of Drugs.' "Forty years ago, hordes of stoned, dirty, stinky hippies converged on San Francisco to "turn on, tune in, and drop out," the 60s rock legend sneered, "Turned off by the work ethic and productive American Dream values of their parents, hippies instead opted for a cowardly, irresponsible lifestyle of random sex, life-destroying drugs and mostly soulless rock music that flourished in San Francisco." (Wall Street Journal). Nugent previously boasted of 'breaking 'more hippies' noses than all the narcs in the free world' and his latest dirty hippy hatred views echoed comments made by George Harrison soon after visiting San Francisco in 1967. Walking towards Golden Gate Park with his then girlfriend Patti Boyd, the now deceased Beatle recalled being surprised when he was surrounded by 'hideous spotty little teenagers', rather than the beautiful people he imagined he'd find. "They were all terribly dirty and scruffy," he said, "I had thought it would be like the Kings Road, only more. Somehow I expected them all to have their own little shops. I expected them all to be nice and clean and friendly and happy." Summer Of Love 2007 (Czech Republic) festival organizer Ales Bleha told Skrufff he understood Ted Nugent's description of original hippies as dirty, stoned and high on LSD, though instead celebrated them for being 'pioneers of freedom in our civilisation'. "Hippies were people full of love, courage and pride, they dared to take on the system more than anyone before of after; much respect," said Ales. Unfortunately for me, I was born in 1970 in a country that operated under one of the worst communist regimes, so I lost the chance to be a part of the hippy movement. I hope in my next life I will get the chance," he added. Despite missing the hippy revolution, Ales took full advantage of the rave movement that swept Eastern Europe as communism collapsed in the early 90s, setting up the Summer Of Love Festival (Czech's first outdoors dance festival and still it's biggest) with music remaining his event's guiding force. "The festival's music policy is totally different from the soulless music for people on drugs and chasing random sex that Ted was referring to, it's about electronic music for the mind- for open minded people," he explained. "We attract people from all over Europe of all ages and types who hate commercial music and still believe in the power of music. And lots of kids too and at least at Summer Of Love they can see the first generation of clubbers who created today's scene. Which is important, because many young people these days don't remember the power of communism or Catholicism, they don't remember how we had to fight for our freedom in 80s and for new music in 90s. "Summer Of Love is my child which I've nurtured for 11 years now and which I imagine as a painting, with my canvas being the artists and people," Ales continued, "Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing thousands of smiling people having a great time with their hands in the air, enjoying the moment."
