What so interesting or conclusive here...today ‘bahunism’ is no longer represented by yesterday bahuns, it symbolizes those in the power. Its not same old homogeneous bahuns; its motley crew. The social order changed noticeably in the last TWO decades with people from every section of the society coming to the fore, but, unfortunately, the bahunism did not fade away. In fact, more dirty and dangerous form of bahunism controlled the country in the later years. Last month I was in Khumbu and I could see how neo-bahunism was functioning there. Our tour operator was a pure bahun. His Khumbu counterpart was a Sherpa. We needed porters also. Even though we did cover all the overheads and contingencies of the operators, the porters were not paid as much as we were charged for. Sherpa ra bahun milera porters ko kamai dekkha dekkhi mareko...dui jana batha milera seasonally matra kaam paune gariblai thageko...the porters had different casts and racial background and belonged to the villages off the trekking routes..the porters also told us that they will be paying some as levy to banduukdhari new ‘jimmals’ of the area.....tyaha jaat saat jasto kehi kura thiyena...batha ra baliyale le milera sojhalai thageko luteko matra thiyo.... Its not one single story to talk about neo-bahunism. If you go little below the hierarchy, except bureaucratic, you find all kinds of people in the mainstream. Yet their working is analogous to yesteryears. So, bahun bashing might not help you.... ..................afno weekend hijai dekhi shuru bhacha ..jainepal...
