I would agree with the people above who have said that rent should be 50% each for the two people and all other utilities should be 33.33% each for the three people. The issue is not about whether someone is financially constrained or not. Also, logically I see no reason why that guy should pay 50% of everything. I understand he got into the contract but you have to be logical as well. Why should he pay for the utilities and other stuff for your friend/wife? On the other hand, If it is you and your wife (I am assuming it out here) doing most of the household chores and that guy only coming by to eat with you guys, that guy should seriously divide up the cost 50% each. Man, I would pay $500 more than do the cooking and cleaning all the time. This is about understanding though... I have seen people stay that way. This is how they did it. Of the total expenses of lets say 10000, the two guys paid 4k each and the girl paid 2k. Does that make sense? So, its more like 60-40. However, if you guys are having such issues unsolved, I do not think it is worth staying together anyway. Bickering about who is supposed to pay the bills will seriously hurt yourself. So, be open and discuss the issue and if you can't resolve it, find another apartment.
