After four years and nine months of permanent residence inside the US, you can apply for US citizenship. That means you may apply 90 days ahead of completion of your five years as a permanent resident. http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf However, if you have travelled outside of the US for more than 6 months (continuously) then subtract those months from the total time of residence.
