Clerk's shooting unprovoked, police say By DOMINGO RAMIREZ JR. ramirez@star-telegram.com /Bedford Police Department Police hope the distinctive hat worn by one of the men will be recognized by someone who will call. BEDFORD -- A store clerk who was fatally shot Monday afternoon appeared not to have provoked the gunman, police said Tuesday. In photographs from D&S Food Mart security surveillance system, Gaurab Rajbanshi opened a cash register as if he were going to make a sale. In the next photographs, one person jumped over a counter while another ran around the counter to get to the cash register, police said Tuesday. Rajbanshi of Euless apparently closed the cash register after being shot, police said. Because they couldn’t open the register, the bandits took only a few items from the store, police said Tuesday. Police declined to say what was taken. “It was just cold-blooded,” Bedford police Lt. Kirk Roberts said Tuesday. In one photograph, a robber kicked at the cash register, trying to open it, police said Tuesday. The suspect also knelt and tried to open the register, police said. Initially, investigators thought the robber may have kicked Rajbanshi, but police now think the robber was trying to open the cash register. Police were searching Tuesday for three suspects who left the store in a gold 1980s Chevy Suburban. Two suspects went in the store while a third apparently waited in the vehicle, police said. Minutes after the shooting, a customer found the 28-year-old clerk, police said. Children had been in the store but couldn’t see over the counter to see the clerk on the floor, police said. The shooting was reported about 4:40 p.m. at the store in the 1500 block of E. Pipeline Road. Generally, the store had one clerk working during the day and two at night, police said. According to police reports, patrol officers had responded to very few calls at the store. Within the last year, officers answered a call of a break-in, Roberts said. Burglars entered the store through the roof, Roberts said. DOMINGO RAMIREZ JR., 817-685-3822
