. The Ukay isn't fit for this hero One of the problems of New Labour Britain is that it is no longer possible to be surprised by the horrible, stupid things that have become normal. When I first heard about the case of the Gurkha VC, Tul Bahadur Pun, denied medical treatment here because he 'failed to demonstrate strong ties with the UK', I am afraid I shrugged. I have become so hardened to the official wiping out of our past, the denigration of military glory, the way we spit on old loyalties, that I just thought: "That's normal, then." Another part of me thought that the use of the expression 'UK' to describe what we used to know as England or Britain was interesting. Does it matter that our country has lost its proper name and replaced it with a set of initials? I think it does. As it happens, this wonderfully brave man, who charged into Japanese machine-gun fire, has almost no connection with the modern 'Ukay'. He is linked with another, almost mythical country which has largely ceased to exist. Maybe he shouldn't come here now the Government has realised that barring him might lose votes and has let him in. The shock of seeing what we have become might kill him, as the Japanese failed to do. .
