No, it's the tarry smoke that the nicotine rides in on that causes cancer, emphysema, and all sorts of other unpleasantness. If you could get people a decent nicotine delivery system, perhaps smoking deaths would go down. That's the idea behind the eCigarette. It's an electronic cigarette that provides smokers with the nicotine they crave without all those pesky carcinogens. And unlike nicotine gum or patches, it replicates the action of smoking, even providing a vapor to exhale. It's just like the real thing, except it won't rob you of a few decades of life or your voice box.
