Good morning Samsara! I wasn't aware of such planned development for Biratnagar, but I know once upon a time, Surkhet, later known as Birendranagar was touted for such urban planning. If I recall correctly, the initiative lost steam and I haven't seen it on anyone's "priority list" of late :) To your other point, I have been a keen observer of emerging economies including those of China, India, Brazil and the SE Asian Tigers amongst others. Hi Kavigrg - Unfortunately, I am not related to this city other than for the reasons I mentioned above :). But if you are open to the idea, I would be thrilled, as I am sure others would be too, if you provided any insights into the city, its culture, economy etc here on the thread. ################ To another point, the thing that really interests me about something like this in India is the construction boom this can potentially create. Construction has often, although perhaps not always, been the employment of choice for rural folks leaving lower paying agricultural work to start what they hope will become a better paying urban life. If there is a boom in construction, there is a good chance construction wages will go up - perhaps not as fast as in other countries because labor is so abundant in India - but nevertheless the demand is likely to expert upward pressure on wages. This can potentially create an economy where the top line is driven by the services sector , including the high yield-IT and back office services, and the increased spending power this creates is then met through new infrastructure worked on by people seeking better wages in construction and related fields. This has often been the broad trend in many economies that have come out of poverty since the industrial revolution. And this is definitely a model we in Nepal can learn from - both in terms of urban planning and economic development (the latter being the primary concern to me).
