COMMITTEE FORMED TO MARK LOKTANTRA DAY Kathmandu, 12 April 2006 A "Loktantra Day Organising Committee" has been formed to effectively mark 24 April, when success was achieved by the People's Movement a year ago. The committee is made up of more than 20 members, including community organisations such as trade unions, student unions, the Nepal Adivasi Janajati Mahasang, and professional organisations, as well as independent citizens. Human rights activist Sushil Pyakurel, a member of the committee's working group, says, "The People's Movement of April 2006 was a grand national event whose success was guaranteed by the joint participation of political parties, broad-based civil society, and community organisations. We feel it is important to remember the People's Movement and salute those who were martyred during the uprising." Shyam Shrestha, another activist and working group member, says, "It is clear from the disaffection among the Madhesi, Janajati, women, Dalit, and other groups that the mandate of the People's Movement is as yet unfulfilled. In the process of celebrating Loktranta Day all over the country, we must evaluate the achievements of the People's Movement and discuss the challenges that still lie ahead." The first meeting of the Organising Committee held today decided to include more organisations and personalities within its fold in the days ahead. It decided to organise a discussion forum on 22 April, and a large rally and assembly on 24 April. Contact: Kanak Mani Dixit
