One Fine Day - Grace

“One fine day” A mumbling voice which soon got lost into the thin air. I turned around to find no one other than Abhi himself. Greeted with a radiant smile, Abhi asked for Chemistry notes, which he had failed to make notes the previous day. Abhi and I were good friends, friends who would hold hands together through thick and thins. I looked through my backpack to find my Chemistry notebook and handed it to him. He thanked me with the same radiant smile and walked away. He was that beautiful star who would make sky beautiful to gaze upon. He was a soul who would never fail to impress people with his radiant smile and his friendly temperament. Abhi and I were at a threshold of finishing high school. We would sit down and share our future plans, our careers, our ambitions, our crickets and our dreams; we both were dreamers. Cricket-talks among girls were sporadic in those days and hence my enthusiasm towards the game soon made me the only victim of his friendly-satires. It would not be inappropriate to label us as cricket fanatics as we hardly failed to keep up with scoreboards of ongoing matches. We even ended up making our Chemistry teacher as our official score keeper during class-time. I never got an opportunity to thank my Chemistry teacher who agreed to volunteer as a scorekeeper for us. He would quietly pass me notes that had score updates. Friendship is not only a saga of having good times together, but not-so-good-times as well. Considering the fact that Abhi and I propagated at the same frequency, there were junctures when our opinions lied in the opposite poles. There was an instance where two different minds failed to produce a harmonic flow and the turbulence was soon witnessed in our friendship vicinity. This sudden commotion left us on two different locality of a gorge. We were transported from a fantasy land to the bitter reality of a shattered friendship. We no longer shared our grief, our dreams, our desires and even our cricket-talks. The two pairs of tear-pooled eyes never seemed to dry up but neither of the eyes gestured reconciliation. The winter passed by and the spring made a grand entrance. Flowers fluttered, birds sang, music were created but our friendship stayed like a withered tree. Time passed by, we both succeeded crossing the hurdle and walked away on two different trails of life. The news of his departure to a foreign land hit my eardrum after a couple of months. As soon as I heard the news, I spontaneously picked up the phone and dialed his number to congratulate him for his new venture. Wonder I did not have to flip my phonebook to find his number after all those bitter months! Suddenly I realized – we are no longer friends but mere strangers! How ironic that is when two good-friends have to pretend as strangers! With a sunken heart, I failed to deliver my excitement to him and could only see him walking away at a distant-land pursuing his dreams and desires. I ask myself if that “one fine day” is going to reappear where we could say sorry to each other so that we could laugh again, share our bitterness, lend shoulders to cry upon, and even talk about crickets.
