Disappointed Indian cricket fans stage protests, burn effigies

New Delhi - Disappointed by India's poor performance against Bangladesh in their opening World Cup cricket championship match in the West Indies, fans staged protests across India on Sunday, news reports said. Underdog Bangladesh won the world championship Group B cricket match in Port of five wickets after bowling out India for a meagre 191 runs in a match that kept Indians awake till early hours Sunday.
Fans in Ahmedabad, capital of eastern Gujarat state, burnt effigies of captain Rahul Dravid, opener Virinder Sehwag and even India's all-time cricket hero Sachin Tendulkar, PTI news agency reported.
In Jalandhar city in northern Punjab state and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, irate fans held a protest marches and burnt posters of the cricketers.
