I didn't say it is not classified under ascomycota but they are kinda different and hence they can be separately classified as "fungi imperfecti" (in the past referred to as Glomeromycota) Please read this: http://www.glyconutrients-center.org/mushrooms-rediscovery.php I don't want to put the whole article here so read the last line from the heading: Data adapted from Jiang (1984) ___________________________________________________________________________ I would also like to let you know that the main diagnostic character of ascomycetes are the presence of "Ascus(asci plural)" which are spore bearing containers. Hence, scientists like to classify them in a different group called "Fungi imperfecti" because there is not enough knowledge about their reproduction methods. However, Fungi imperfecti is a more phylogenetically complicated because scientists just put fungi in that category when they lack the necessary knowledge about mode of reproduction to better classify them.
