Chure, Bhabar locals demand autonomy POST REPORT SARLAHI, Feb 17 - At a time when demands for federal and autonomous structure of the state by various indigenous groups are taking headline space, locals of Chure and Bhabar region of five districts have also demanded an autonomous state. Chure Bhabar Pradesh Ekta Samaaj, a recently formed group, of people from Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari and Dhanusha, concluded a mass meeting at Hariaun of Sarlahi to this effect Saturday. The Chure Hills, an extension of the Siwalik ranges of hills, runs from east to west across the length of Nepal separating the Terai from the hilly region. Similarly the Bhabar, below the Chure region, separates the Terai from the Inner Terai. "As most residents in Chure and Bhabar hills are sure to be oppressed in case all the southern foothills of Chure region are included with the Madhesh, we demand a separate state for indigenous groups, dalits, janjatis and other pahadiya people residing here," said Keshav Mainali, coordinator of the group. He warned that they would resort to further protests if the government fails to pay heed to their "right demands".
