Tharus and Madheshi are different Tharus are not the same people as Madheshis. They are culturally and ethnically different. These indigenous people are so humble and simple that I got amazed once. I want to share my two experiences with these Tharu people. Once I went to western Tarai with one of my relatives who was studying with me; he was a landlord with few Kamaiy (bounded laborers) family. We went by a night bus. A very poor looking guy with his innocent looking about 8 years old son got on our bus. The conductor said it was not a local bus and he couldn’t take local passenger by law. However, the he insisted to help them because they would have to wait long to catch next local transportation. Conductor said nothing because he couldn’t say OK by law. The guy sat close to our sit. I kept looking at them because my soft heart was melting. After sometime they got off, my eyes were chasing them. Conductor was somewhere outside. They looked for conductor quite for some time, handed him the fare then only left. I got surprised to his honesty. He could have walked away because the conductor was not caring for their fare. What a honesty! I asked my relative about those father and son. He told me that they were Tharu. That was my first encounter with Tharu. Unlike backward Madheshi, Tharus are culturally honest. They have cultural difference. Tharu can live a life of slavery but it is unlikely they can ever live on rubbery. Backward Madheshis have culture of aversion where as Tharus have culture of ignorance. This is their fundamental difference. When I saw Kamaiyas in my relative’s house, I filled up with compassion. I was a teenager so did my relative. I asked him not to keep Kamaiyas and set them free. He couldn’t do anything but he said he requested his family to do something for his Kamaiyas. His family purposed a plan to them according to which the Kamaiyas would come out of his debt within 10 years. His family would provide them food and cloth for whole year instead of giving lot of rice to spare by making alcohol. But they didn’t agree with his family. They said they couldn’t live without alcohol and they had no complain to their life. To be master you have to have a mind of master. If you have such a regressive culture how can you progress? If you don’t try to come out of such a miserable life how can you come out? If you really want to come out, nothing can stop you. If there is will there is way. …………You need a motivated culture... you need a progressive culture... this culture will bring you and your off springs out of slavery... Jwish were slaved by Roman and brought to Europe. However they know what they were and they became most rich and progressive people in the Europe that lead to World War II. They had such culture... they didn't have culture of slavery...
