Curfews imposed after 14 killed in Nepal violence Friday, February 02, 2007 Curfews were imposed as Nepal's Cabinet held an emergency meeting today, forming a ministerial committee assigned to resolve violent protests that have left 14 people dead. Three of the victims died yesterday when police fired on hundreds of protesters attacking government buildings in Inaruwa, a town about 190 miles south-east of the capital, Kathmandu. Residents of Nepal's southern plains have been pressing for more autonomy as well as more seats in the national legislature and a guaranteed number of slots in the country's administration. They say the government's development and policy decisions have long favoured people living in the Himalayan mountains to the north. Curfews were re-imposed today in several towns in the area, a home ministry statement said. The three-member government committee formed today is headed by Agriculture Minister Mahanta Thakur and will try start talks with protesting groups to resolve the situation, Tourism Minister Pradeep Gyawali said after the Cabinet meeting. Violent protests in the region began on January 19, claiming 14 lives so far and crippling daily life in the involved areas. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/breaking-news/world/asia/article2209322.ece
