But how would we know if there was anything missing unless somebody comes up with alternative idea/history? Here you accepted that there is something missing in the history. This alone cannot mean that missing part is radically different from what has come to the light. The missing part could be in concert with what is known today, or might contradict as well. But how can we claim that the present known history is 'wrong' unless either it is proved wrong or inversely, alternative history is proved correct. So before any further research is done in the topic, nobody can deny whatever is existing as truth. Whatever is there is correct unless it is proved wrong. So, why dont you do or encourage others to do some research and prove it wrong?
