Royalists behind Lahan incident: Mahara BY BINOD TRIPATHI CHAINPUR, CHITWAN, Jan 23 - Stating that royalists had instigated the Lahan unrest, CPN (Maoist) spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara has urged the government and seven parties to observe restraint. Talking to journalists at Chainpur Monday, Mahara alleged that status-quoists who want to save monarchy have formed small groups and caused unrest in Lahan immediately after orchestrating unrest in Nepalgunj. "The allegation that our cadre shot dead a man in Lahan on Friday is totally false," Mahara claimed. "Those who are against constituent assembly elections have initiated efforts to disintegrate the state by instigating Madhesi people," he said. "Capitalizing on the indecisiveness of the seven-party government, the Lahan incident was orchestrated to prevent constituent assembly elections from taking place," he added. Mahara further said that if royalists continue these kinds of activities, the eight-party interim government will directly declare Nepal a democratic republic. "If people are denied their right to cast their votes freely, the interim government will be prepared to declare the nation a democratic republic," he said. Reacting to a recent statement by the US envoy that Maoists were trying to deposit crummy weapons brought from Bihar in the cantonments, Mahara said this is a part of American ploy to prevent constituent assembly elections from taking place.
