The only situation where one cannot know the color of his own cap is when all 3 people are raising hands and sees both others wearing same colored caps (red). A, the smart one, saw that both B and C were not being able to tell the color of their respective caps. If A had black cap, both B and C could tell that they had red caps. As B and C were not sure about the color of their cap, A claimed to have red cap.
