MADHESHI VS PAHADI!!

I was listening to live telecast of the last session of the reinstated parliament the day before yesterday. After Subash Nemwang allowed Sushil Koirala to put his comment on the interim constitution he started his lousy speech. In the middle of his speech he referred to the people from southern nepal. He called them "madhise." I know that he did not say that on purpose but just a tongue slip. Later a MP from Sadvawana Party(A) started his speech in hindi and he made a comment on Sushil Koirala's tongue slip saying he said that on purpose to lower the people from the south calling MADHISE. Then like any clever politician he did not go on to say "Pahadi" have been supressing the "Madhesi." He started saying Khas bhasi (people who speak Nepali as mother tongue, Bahun, Chhetri, etc.) have been supressing the Madhesi for centuries and that ought to change. Hmm.. good point, yes that has to change, I felt myself. The next morning I got an email from Mr. Rakesh Sharma. I do not know who this person is but he had this email full of links from www.madhesh.com, a website to discuss spearation of Madhesh from Nepal and make it a separate country. There were lots of articles, blog posts and comments on how people from south are being dominated by people from north. The suggestion I found there was simply split the country into two and spearate Madhesh from Nepal. I read a few articles and found that none of the articles couuld actually address the soul of the problem. One of the article was written in Nepali and the writer was nagging about having to learn Nepali langauage. He was against Nepali being the Official Language. But he himslef was writing it in Nepali. What he forgot was the basic purpose of the language is to communicate. As long as two people understand what is being said does not matter what language is being used. That is the primary purpose of the language. In doing so, language helps people to stick together. As Sushil Koirala saying "Madise" bothered some, speaking in Hindi in the assembly must have bothered others. But, whether we speak Nepali, Hindi or English, as long as we stick together as Nepali I do not see a reason why there should be any problem. As far as calling Madhise to Madhesi, its not that Madhesi are the only people who have been given names like that in Nepal. Bhote to any one with Mongolian Face, Jyapu- to Newars, Kheicha to Chetteri, Bahun to Brahmin, and the list goes on. Even in Terai, within the Madhesis, tharus are seen as lower by the so called upper castes, there is discrimination. So, why only point fingers to others? Let's look within ourselves. Lets correct ourselves first before we point finger to our brothers. A lot of people hate "Bahuns" saying they are the most clever and are responsible for making this system of discrimination in our country. But, can we forget the contribution to bringing Nepal to this stage. Most of the leaders of our country today are from that caste, it is not because they are from that caste they became leadears but their ability and intellectual that they are able lead the masses. So, kudos to their ability not their caste. With power in hand everyone wants to make it easier for their family and friends. That is why we need democracy to check an balance and when they do too much we need to change. Like one said, they are like diapers, we need to change often. Let's not fight with each other for weakness we all have. Lets fight the weakness withing ourselves. United we stand, divided we fall. One Nepal including Himal, Pahad and Terai!!
