Traveling between Melbourne and Sydney

If you do travel by car, make sure that your gas tank is at least half full all the time. There are not as many gas stations as in the US. Couple of years ago, we drove from Sydney to Melbourne. We took the inland route rather than the coastal because it was shorter and we wanted to stop by Canberra, Australia's capitol. When we headed out of Canberra, our car's gas gauge showed little less than quarter full. Good thing we filled up the tank immediately because after that gas station there was not another one for almost 200 kilometers. Though the highway is between Australia's two largest cities, it can be quite deserted at times. We were thinking it would suck if the car broke down because the settlements were few and far between.
