Abortion

hmmm...sticky..very sticky topic. i, personally, tend to agree mostly with libertarian stance on abortion. Since the embryo in the early stages of pregnancy can't live outside its mother, it is truly part of her body and not a separate individual. During this time period, a woman having an abortion is exercising property rights over her body, not killing a being separate from herself. She is the individual with rights. The embryo, at this point in time, is not an individual. Once the embryo is old enough to live outside the womb, the woman is still under no moral obligation to carry the child to term. She can invite people to her house, change her mind, and ask them to leave. She can invite an embryo to grow inside of her body, change her mind, and ask it to leave. However, if her unwanted guests don't leave immediately, she wouldn't just pull out a gun and shoot them. That would be (excuse the pun) 'overkill.' Libertarians believe in using only the amount of force necessary to defend one's self and property. Going farther turns defenders into aggressors and puts them in the wrong. Abortion at this latter stage of pregnancy is, in my opinion, overkill, because the embryo is now an individual and abortion is not the use of least force. Instead of abortion, delivery could be induced and adoptive parents could take over the time and expense of nurturing the infant. When technology enables any embryo to grow outside the mother into a healthy infant, abortion will become obsolete. A libertarian society makes medical advances and adoptions easier and quicker, enabling this day to come much faster. LooTe
