You could use VPN; but since you're only concerned with controlling it while within the LAN, the best bet would be to use VNC. Install TightVNC or WinVNC -- you don't need to worry about port forwarding; simply set up a password and use the browser to remotely connect and manipulate the machine from any computer. By default, Ports 5800 & 5900 are used. So, if you are to access your 2K server with VNC service running at the IP 10.1.1.5, simply type http://10.1.1.5:5800 on the browser, and it will prompt you for the password, then you're in!! No need to have a client running on the workstation you're using. :) !!! ~ Make sure you have JAVA VM installed on your workstation machine though! ~@~
