Guys dont go by the literal definition here. Madheshi also called 'Madhise' around terai region are of course the people living in terai region, but actually are an ethnic groups who have been living in terai, way before bahuns, chhetris or newars came to terai. I really dont know their origin but I suspect they came from area around bihar and UP and rajasthan of india. And they speak their own language(s) that is very close to hindi. Long time ago the madheshis used to own most of the terai region. That was till bahuns and the chhetris came to the scene. The bahuns and chhetris were very shrewd people. They came to terai and took over terai exploiting the naiveness of local madheshis. They seized most of the land owned by madheshis and pushed them into poverty. But not all of them were so naive. There were few very smart ones also known as "Madwaris" now. Well they took over whole nepal. So its not the matter of madheshis being opressed now, poor people always face some sort of opression everywhere in the world. It doesnt matter if you are a bahun or a madheshi if you are poor u will feel a bit opressed. But in human world things are not that simple. Being in a minor community makes you feel that the whole community is a single body. Probably the people living abroad realize this thing. If one member of the communiy gets picked the whole community feels the effect. I can understand why the madheshis feel bit alienated. There is a huge gap between the madheshis and the rest. But its not entirely the fault of bahuns or chhetris or newars. I can tell by fact that most(not all) of the madheshis feel closer to India than with Nepal. If the madheshis want to integrate with the main stream they should first feel that they are nepalese and they belong to nepal. But on the basis of right they all have same rights as any nepalese has. In fact they might be better off because they are trusted by the rich madwaris and they recruit them in their companies more than other nepalis. If you go to any factory owned by madwaris you will find 80% of the people working there are madheshis. Anyway I think its not the problem of ethnicity here. The main problem is poverty and education. If we can get rid of these problems this problem will eliminate itself. Well you know nepal has such a weak body that it is shaken by every passing breeze.
