NepalHeaven, you are right I worked for KUMS and I keep close look at its progress or rather demise through my contacts. I think you are right about Dr. Thapa: I think he got fed up with the KU system and decided to go for postdoc. He could handle the Basic Sciences much better than Dr. Pant who has know idea about PBL or research. I remember Dr. Thapa was crucial for KUMS not falling apart when Dr.Karki and his team left. Without him, the Americans would not have come to teach in KUMS. I remember for fact that Dr. Thapa told us that he was trying to get someone as competent as Dr. Karki to kUMS and that he would not replace Dr. karki. That shows he is not power hungry and we all thought that Dr. Pant would be a good leader for KUMS. Also, Dr. Thapa supported Dr. Pant all the time, which was crucial at the beginning. I think he said he would stay in KUMS at least until the first batch graduate, so may be he thinks it is the right time to leave KUMS. We had also heard that Dr. Thapa had developed strong collaborations with universities in UK and USA but the people in KU seemed to feel threatened in case this becomes very successful. I get the feeling that KU leaders do not care and do not think they need to be very successful - they just want to hang on to their jobs. It is not surprising that they made life difficult for Dr. Thapa.
