Maoists propose federal republic in new constitution The CPN-Maoists has proposed a federal republic set up in the country in the interim constitution. The Maoists have also suggested the Interim Constitution Drafting Committee (ICDC) not to provide any space to the King in the new statute. In its suggestions to ICDC submitted on Thursday, the Maoists, however expressed commitment to competitive multiparty democracy. The rebels also proposed fundamental rights and freedoms such as press freedom, right to publication and expression, right to free movement, right against untouchability and discrimination. The rebels have also proposed an interim parliament, an interim government, an interim judiciary and an interim security in the new constitution. They have also proposed to divide the country into nine states namely Kirat, Madhesi, Tharuwan, Newar, Tamang, Tamuwang, Seti, Mahakali, Bheri and Magarat. The rebels also asked the constitution be named “Interim Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nepal 2006.” A team led by former Justice of the Supreme Court Laxman Prasal Aryal is drafting an interim constitution to incorporate Maoists into the interim government and hold the election of the constituent assembly. nepalnews.com pb July 28 06
