if you are applying for green card thru employment, with your pHD , you fall under EB2. FOR EB2, it requires 5 yrs of work experience in your speality field after your undergrad studies.( in most cases without counting the experience at the employer who is sponsoring you) sometimes they will even go as far as asking documentation for 10 yrs of progressive work experience.
