In the same way the marginalized Nepali community in India should also get the same respect and treatment and we should understand that for the Indians and others Nepali is a common identity and not a fragmented one as we speak of. Unabated infiltration concerns NESO From Our Spl Correspondent (Shillong Times) NEW DELHI: The North East Students Organisation (NESO) has expressed concern over the unabated influx of foreign nationals into Meghalaya and demanded scrapping of Indo-Nepal Treaty of Friendship which it said is only helping the illegal immigrants. Talking to The Shillong Times, the Chairman of the NESO, Mr Samujjal Bhattacharrya said that after Asom, it is Meghalaya which is facing the brunt of influx not only from Bangladesh but also from Nepal. "The Indo-Nepal Treaty of Friendship, 1950 has opened the floodgates to lakhs of Nepali nationals who have entered the region and managed to obtain permanent citizenship through unfair means," he said. "Some have even got themselves elected to the State Assemblies and even to the Parliament," he said. When pointed out that the treaty is valid for the whole country, the All Asom Students Union leader said that the treaty should not be applicable in entire NE region. Meghalaya is facing immense pressure from illegal immigrants which should be stopped. The massive additional population is putting huge pressure on the local indigenous population, he said.
