Italian Pot Smokers' Half-Gram Jail Threat Silvio Berlusconi's far right government succeeded in introducing draconian anti drug laws last week, just days before being voted out of office by a wafer thin majority. The harsh new laws mean users caught with miniscule amounts of any drug will face losing their driving licences and passports, whilst people found with more than the thresholds face between six and 20 years in jail. Trafficking penalties kick in at 0.5grams for cannabis (though based on THC levels), cocaine at 0.75 grams and ecstasy at 0.75g (5 or so pills). "Up until today there's been total arbitrariness and it can happen that a drug addict can be convicted or not only on the basis of the judge's discretion, setting aside the type of quantity of the drug," Italian minister Carlo Giovanardi said in a statement about the new rules, " We want the law to step in because the traffickers of death must be beaten," he added.
