I bet, you didn't learn how to swim out of a book or from just people telling you what to do and how to do. I am sure you actually went to the river and tried it out. I bet you drowned a couple of times or were at the verge of drowning. Likewise, culture and traditions and are not spectator sports. You have to "drown" yourself in that. Live the moment and be humble in the process. My son is going to miss that and thats my failure as a parent.
