If you are not graduating this semester, you can work as an intern in CPT -Curricular Practical Training. However, you have to register for some credit hour class to do that and a permission from your program director. You don't even have to send any documents to USCIS. However, if you are graduating this semester and plan to do an internship in summer, you have to have your OPT approved by USCIS. You should apply at your earliest for that, it takes at least 6 weeks to get it approved which used to take almost 3 months in the past. Regarding your international advisor, if you are graduating this semester, she is right when she said you didn't manage it well. You should have applied for your OPT earlier to get it on time, dude. Hope this helps.
