Youngest Aussie at Games wins silver, eyes gold Thursday March 23, 2006 Last week Melissa Wu was chasing ducks, today she chases a gold medal in the 10m platform at the Commonwealth Games. The 13-year-old platform diver is Australia's smallest and youngest Games team member and faces the two toughest competitors in today's tower event in Olympic champion Chantelle Newbery and bronze medallist Loudy Tourky. Wu has already settled her Games debut nerves with a silver medal alongside former gymnast Alex Croak in the synchro 10m event last night, finishing behind the pairing of Newbery and Tourky. She amazingly beat both Tourky and Newbery at the national selection trials last month to cement her Games debut, pulling off a sensational final dive to leapfrog both seasoned campaigners. "I'm always nervous, especially now at the Commonwealth Games," said Wu. "The last dive at trials I was coming in third place and had to pull of big dive to get into first. I knew it was the moment to pull it off." If Wu can pull off another unlikely victory she will equal Canadian diving champion Alexandre Despatie, who won the 10m platform in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, as the youngest champion in Games history. In other events today Despatie, now 20, will start overwhelming favourite in the men's 3m springboard having secured a comfortable victory in the 1m springboard last night. Steven Barnett, bronze medallist in the 1m event, will lead the Australian contingent which includes Matthew Mitcham and Robert Newbery. ©AAP 2006
