OHCHR helps Khanal, Gautam, Bohara escape arrest Kathmandu, February 14: The Armed Police Force personnel today gheraoed the central office of the CPN-UML in Balkhu where standing committee and central committee members were holding an important meeting. Party’s central committee member Rajendra Pandey told this daily that an APF team led by Superintendent of Police Madhav Thapa gheraoed the party office for about two-and-a-half-hour in a bid to arrest Bamdev Gautam, Jhala Nath Khanal and Amrit Kumar Bohara. Pandey said the security personnel arrived in three vehicles, including a police van (Ba 1 Jha 6517). The leaders, however, managed to escape when a team of UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and representatives of other rights defenders arrived at the scene after learning that the security personnel had surrounded the office. Pandey said the security personnel left the area after the OHCHR team rushed to the office and inquired about the incident. He said there were nine standing committee members and six-odd central committee members holding a meeting to chalk out the programme to observe Democracy Day (February 19) as anti-autocracy day, as decided by the agitating seven-party alliance. According to Pandey, the meeting decided to mark the democracy day as a co-ndolence day for the killing of two political cadres of the UML and NC-D in Dang and Dhangadi, respectively. The meeting also noted that the Supreme Court’s decision to scrap the controversial Royal Commission for Corruption Control was “constitutional, positive and a welcome step”. The meeting was chaired by acting general secretary Bohara.
