A LETTER FROM KOREA

I respect some of the sentiments in the article by the author and I too hope that the country and it's people-both within and outside Nepal realize the importance of working for the betterment of society and the country..it's about time we came to the realization that the country desperately needs all the help she can get. My points of disagreement however are as follows: when the author implies that Nepalese by nature, are lazy and that the people don't work hard enough--one only need look at the multitude of labourers working in cement factories and carpet factories in Nepal-literally giving themselves an early death because of the need to earn money and feed their families. The throngs of young laboureres heading for the gulf to work on the booming real estate/construction market there risking their lives without the benefit of labour laws that ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Second: Korea came out of the war..commendable yes, but the never had to deal with not just internal terrorism but an ideology that is much harder to overcome. We may win the war against the Moists but what guarantee that having won that war, the ideology that has helped the insurgency grow will not only grow but worse yet, splinter and give rise to several equally murderous philosphies? Last but no means the least..yes, the nation and its children need to help to get Nepal out of the stagnant economy and customs and beliefs that have held us hostage but, please let's not turn to trying to convert people into other religions. Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam, Hinduism et all are religions--not the solution to the problems that the country faces....even the U.S has a constitutional rule of separation of Church and State...let the State of Nepal prosper without requiring Religion to be a part of that solution!
