Body-Piercing Blood Poisoning Death Prompts Danger Alert
A 17 year old British student who died of septicaemia almost certainly
contracted the disease from having his lip pierced, a coroner told a
South Yorkshire court this week.
Daniel Hindle, who lived normally though had suffered from a heart
condition from birth, was rushed to hospital after collapsing with blood
poisoning some two months after being pierced though died soon after.
"Those who are vulnerable to infection, because of a heart condition or
any other reason, perhaps need to understand this isn't just the fusty
old adults trying to stop their fun," Christopher Dorries, the coroner,
told the Court, adding "There can be very real risks."
Daniel died in December 2002 some six months before the European Union
Commission issued a terrifying alert about the health risks associated
with tattoo and body piercing parlours which claimed that almost half
of all body piercings 'lead to acute infections requiring medical
treatment'.
'Their (unhygienic) practices can bring about viral infections such as
hepatitis, HIV, bacterial and fungal infections," the Commission warned
in July 2003, "And malignant lesions such as melanoma (skin cancer),
leprosy and other devastating diseases"(The Guardian).

years for tuberculoid leprosy symptoms to appear and about eight years
for lepromatous leprosy symptoms to appear. Lepromatous leprosy symptoms
are a chronically stuffy nose and many skin lesions and nodules on both
sides of the body . . .')
