The Taiwanese director you mentioned, Ang Lee, is quite famous for his works. Sense and Sensibilities, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Ice Storm, Hulk are some of his well known movies. So, I am not surprised that his most recent release - Brokeback Mountain - is an Oscar contender.
