The last two stanzas reflect eh reality as of now, and the stanza makes a compact reflection of ENRON - Arthur Anderson fiasco. They were smartest people on the business with name, fame, credibility and were a revered entity in their business. They welcomed their own destruction, became oblivious and went playing golf with Enron people, and instead of playing auditors they were partners in crime, destroyed truck loads of paper and took a huge chance which is why Sarbanes-Oxley is killing their siblings in their field and the lesser mortals.
