These are the entities that created society in any sense of the term. They taught us the arts, music, warfare, religion and science. They are some of the greatest teachers one can have if their knowledge and power is used intelligently . . .') Puritan Past Behind Britain's Binge Drinking Culture Leading cultural historian Dr Angela McShane-Jones suggested this week that binge-drinking, fighting and vomiting in the streets are defining characteristics of what it means to be British, based on traditions stretching back over a thousand years. "The willingness to get hammered has always been seen as a British thing," the Warwick University expert told the Daily Telegraph, "But in the 16th and 17th centuries drinking became a demonstration of loyalty to the Crown and Church. It showed you weren't a Puritan but were a fine upstanding citizen." Dr McShane-Jones added that typical fine upstanding citizens of the time patriotically roamed England's streets looking for non-drinking Puritans to assault, echoing attitudes still prevalent in the 21st century. "Even today if someone says they don't drink it's treated as something slightly questionable," she pointed out. Dr McShane-Jones first revealed her findings in an interview with the BBC in 2004 and described how London's streets were literally flowing with conduits of wine when the King returned in the 1660s. "This riotous drinking became really quite dangerous, because, obviously, these men were armed," she added. "Imagine a group of football supporters, except these men are pro-King. They'd all be drinking, and if you won't drink with them, a brawl would ensue and somebody would likely die." Meanwhile in the Guardian, the newspaper suggested binge drinking predated the Romans though agreed that the middle Ages were a particularly popular era for patriotic excess. "The English are noted among foreigners for their persistent drinking," John of Salisbury reportedly said in the12th Century. "They were accustomed to drink till they were sick," it was said of the English before William the Conqueror (1066)," said the Guardian. Conservative MP and top rank journalist Boris Johnson also addressed the issue in his latest column for the Telegraph this week, declaring 'we drink the Russians off the balcony; we drink the Ukrainians under the table. Of our teenagers, 40 per cent have been dead drunk more than 10 times in the past 12 months, compared with a piffling 7% of French teenagers." "It was as I was skimming through these statistics that I suddenly had an insight. I realised to my horror that I was reading the figures with pride," the High Society icon added. "And there my friends is the trouble- deep down, because of some peculiarity in our psyche, we think it rather admirable to get bladdered, leathered, rat-arsed and otherwise hogwhimpering drunk," he declared. http://www.webtender.com/handbook/games ('Have fun with The Webtender's collection of drinking games, but be extremely careful if you play any these games, especially the ones with high buzz factors . . .') music links http://www.thekeylondon.com (London's The Key- brand new site) http://media2.7digital.com/motion/Princess_Superstar_Perfect_Low.mov (Princess Superstar's new video Perfect) http://www.trackitdown.net/genre/breaks/track/11990.html (Hip Kid 'Love Comes Quickly' Soul Glow Records: Hip Kid covers the Pet Shop Boys classic in a breakbeat style.
