King Gyanendra will be last monarch in Nepal: Karat: New Delhi: Stating that the days of Nepal monarchy were numbered, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Monday urged New Delhi to stop any support to King Gyanendra. "We are sure that this king (Gyanendra) is going to end the spell of monarchy in Nepal because people there are convinced that the monarchy is against democracy," Karat told a news conference here. "India should not lend any support to the king, particularly in providing the arms," he said. At the press conference, Karat and Janata Dal (Secular) leader Surendra Mohan issued a joint statement condemning the "anti democratic" moves of the king. "It is highly deplorable that King Gyanendra resorted to violence against a peaceful demonstration in Kathmandu leading to large-scale arrests," the statement. Former prime minister G.P. Koirala and other senior political leaders were injured in police action against them during the demonstration. The statement asked the monarch to remember the promises he gave to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a meeting in Indonesia on restoring democracy. The leaders also expressed solidarity with the democratic forces in Nepal. Karat also urged the central government to be "vigilant" about the unrest in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, which has been rocked by a series of bomb blasts blamed on Islamist fundamental forces. http://www.newkerala.com/news.php?action=fullnews&id=20047
