UML decides to go for 'democratic republicanism'
The ongoing Central Committee meeting of the CPN -UML Thursday passed the political report presented by general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, proposing ?democratic republicanism? as the main goal of the democratic movement of the seven parties.
After a weeklong hectic debate over the proposal, the majority of the Central Committee endorsed Nepal?s proposal with some amendment, UML officials informed.
The proposal stresses the need to make democratic republicanism as the common political goal of the ongoing democratic movement and seeks an end to ?autocratic monarchy? for absolute democracy.
Democratic forces must oppose the ?present form of autocratic monarchy? as the King?s successive moves broke the power equation of 1990, the proposal said.
The UML meet also decided to move towards absolute democracy, which, in principle, is democratic republicanism, through an election to constituent assembly calling upon the allies of the seven-party movement to push for it.
Three central leaders ? Mukunda Neupane, Bishnu Poudel and Krishna Gopal Shrestha, tabled their note of dissent opposing the decision of the Central Committee to go for democratic republicanism. They said republicanism could not be the immediate goal of the seven-party movement in the present situation.
Meanwhile, a committee headed by Standing Committee member Jhal Nath Khanal presented its evaluation report on the party?s organizational activities and the performance of the ousted Sher Bahadur Deuba government of which UML was an ally -- at today?s meeting.
Dubbing the Deuba coalition as a failed government, Khanal?s report holds the party leadership responsible for the poor performance of that government, UML sources said.
The meeting will continue on Friday as well. nepalnews.com mk Aug 25 05
