The gun fighting erupted after hundreds of Maoists attacked the police station and two state-run banks in the village near Nepal-India border on Thursday night, the daily reported, quoting Director General of Police Ashish Ranjan Sinha, the state police chief. About 100 Maoists from Nepal were also involved in the attack, according to the Indian police. Seventeen Maoists, two police officers, one paramilitary soldier and a security guard were killed in the all-night gun battle that ended early Friday morning, Indian police said.
