I hope this DIG Gopal Man Shrestha does not go unpunished. He should be demoted immediately and jailed. He should not only get the penalty of driving without license and running the redlight - just like any other citizen - but his punishment should be exponentially more precisely because he is a police who broke the law and did not even care. No wonder Maoists can make their claim! People like these make ordinary citizens to run into Maoists' embrace. I am sick and tired of people with responsibility abusing their power in such blatant way. This is like slapping all Nepalis and spitting on their face and saying, "lu khayis, khucching". No wonder our country is such a shameful position. Thank you Mr. Kiyoshi for making your stand without any trepidation. I, as an ordinary Nepali, salute you. And am shameful of our feudalistic police force who not only let theis lawbreaker DIG Gopal Man Shrestha go, but also saluted him while he broke the law. ------------------------------------------------------------ You are reading: The Kathmandu Post >> Front Page ------------------------------------------------------------ Where is your license DIG? POST REPORT KATHMANDU, May 18 - Traffic rules do not apply to police officers. Consider this: DIG Gopal Man Shrestha of the Armed Police Force was caught red-hand driving without a license by a Japanese traffic controller, who was in Kathmandu Wednesday to teach the traffic police. DIG Shrestha who was at the wheel of a vehicle with number plate Ba 1 Jha 5218, was crossing the intersection at New Baneswor Chowk ignoring the red light when Kiyoshi Baba, the Japanese volunteer asked him to stop. The DIG, used to being saluted by the traffic police on duty, was not spared. Though confronted by a group of angry armed security personnel, Kiyoshi disregarded the threats. He approached Shrestha and boldly demanded his driving license. The latter had none. DIG Shrestha asked Kiyoshi to get into his vehicle and said they would talk about it at his office. He refused to leave his duty. Nearby, a local traffic police was busy saluting Shrestha as the latter drove away . Meanwhile, the Valley Traffic Police has done nothing, not even inquired about the vehicle for brazenly violating traffic rules.
