Right or wrong, I have sent the following email to a list that was vigorously discussing about Princess Suji's announcement of showing up at the rally. From: . . . . . . . To: [. . . . . . . . ] Cc: [. . . . . . . . ] Date: Friday, May 13, 2005 2:53 PM Subject: Re: Nepalese Street Demonstration in-front-of White House, Washington D.C. Dear friends, I am aware that some royalist elements are disparately trying to spread false rumors about the rally for obvious reason. They know this rally is going to shatter their false claim [of "majority representation" ] about a small pro-King rally they managed to organize at the same place some time ago. And it will. However, I am glad that this hullabaloo about Sujata Koirala occurred. This hullabaloo has not only sent a strong and necessary message to everybody concerned, but also has highlighted an important thing the organizers of the rally failed to convey. What they failed to convey is that this rally is not only for rescuing democracy from the totalitarians- the King and the Maoists- but also from the incompetent and corrupt generation of political leaders. Had the organizers conveyed this message as well, any corrupt leader or their coterie would not dare to show up. Personally I am disappointed to see that the organizer missed one of the fundamental discussions of Nepali democracy, that is, the call for rejecting the "corrupt democracy", in their communication. They might have thought that that is not the priority at the moment. If that's what it is, they could not be more wrong. A call for a democracy without the commitment not to corrupt it is not only senseless at this point of our history but also is uninspiring and, most important of all, unable to answer anti-democratic questions. If you can not say NO to "corrupt democracy" at this point, you don't have a cause of democracy at this point. Simple as that. So, let's try to make up for that careless or otherwise omission made by the organizing committee and unwaveringly express our detest and commitment against "CORRUPT DEMOCRACY" along with "ABSOLUTE MONARCHY" and "OBSOLETE MAOISM". And let us also not hide that the logical or at least an alternative conclusion of opposing all these three anti-democratic schools leads to... ahem ahem... a call for a DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC of Nepal. I feel that there is an undeclared and silent understanding among the organizers to keep REPUBLICAN voice suppressed in the rally. Just a hunch. I may be wrong. As a believer and supporter of DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC of Nepal and observing that a peaceful political way for that is now open in Nepal (refer Political parties acceptance to the idea of Constituent Assembly ) and that the voice for a DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC is growing , I call upon all democracy loving friends to show solidarity to REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT in Nepal at this rally. My slogans: No To Monarchy No To Maoism No to Compromised Democracy Voice For Republic Nepal Signature
