Dodhare-jyu, Unlike many anti-rally friends here in Sajha, you have raised some very valid issues with utmost civility and sound reasoning. I have a lot of respect for you for that. Here is my case against some of the points that you've raised, with the hopes of merely continuing the debate. You have chosen to juxtapose America's "Support Our Troops" phenomenon with that of supporting the RNA intheir fight againt terrorism. Like Nepe has poitned our, dhodhare-jyu, RNA is far, far less accountable to the public than their American counterparts. The command structure which squarely puts the US Armed Forces strictly under elected civillian government is simply non-existent in RNA's case. Furthermore, despite many problems the US soldiers have with regards to human rights violations, and I know some of them go unnoticed, US Armed Forces are under far more stringent scrutiny than the RNA soldiers are. There have been numerous cases of US soldiers being convicted and severely punished for their crimes whenever they have ben found guilty. One of the soldiers found guilty in Abu-Ghraib scandal, for instance, for merely beating a prisoner with a rifle butt was court marshalled and sentenced to 2 years in jail. Compare that to a Nepali major founf guilty of KILLING 19 unarmed prisoners at point blank range was sentenced to merely 9 months in prison, with no court marshall. It is this culture of being open to greater publci scrutny that makes the US Armed Forces far more respectable, hence "supportablke for Americans" than our RNA soldiers. Furthermore, RNA is not even close to being clean when it comes to corruption, nepotism, classism, casteism, etc. that plagues any other political institution in Nepal per se. The scale of corruption within the RNA is far more dangerous both in terms of size and in terms of almost complete impunity they enjoy. The bottom line is, dhodhare-jyu, respect and support are GAINED, not commanded. American soldiers have by and large gained that respect from many American citizens, while RNA has been simply demanding it from us. That simply can't happen. Also, please take note of the fact that there are many other Americans who choose not to support the cause of war and are at free will to voice their opposition to their soldiers being used for causes that do not conform to their beliefs. Ironically, it is this willingness to accept differences and the openness to respectful disagreements -- basically freedom to disagree -- that ultimately unites the Americans. In other words, unity cannot be achieved through coercive commands; rather, unity is far more feasible and stronger when it comes from DEMOCRATIC principles of freedom of choice. Americans who suuport the troops and those who don't are ultimately profoundly binded in unity because they have the choice, they have the freedom, and they know they can disagree. Specially in a multi-ethnic, pluralistic society like ours, I cannot fathom a true, genuine and strong unity unless we encompass the principles of liberty in our social structure. The more we demand unity without first intriducing ALL INCLUSIVE policies, the further divided we will be. Divisions and threats to unity come NOT from differences in opinions and choices, but from the unwilingness to accept, cherish and respect those differences.
