May 8th was celebrated as the 60th anniversary of VE day, that is, Victory of Allied powers in Europe in World War II, in 1945. That day, in most of the TV channels, they were showing films of the war. In one channel, there was a documentary of the victory in Europe, and that was in color! They showed the final days of the war, war ravaged Britain and Germany. After Hitler committed suicide, the German radio announced his death, and that too was heard in the documentary! After the victory, the British people gathered in Trafalgar Square in London, and Winston Churchill was shown riding through the streets, waving triumphantly to the people. It was so interesting to see London of that time, quaint sign boards, old double deckered buses, and crowded streets. People were celebrating and burning the effigies of Hitler. Churchill was even shown later, waving from the balcony of the Buckingham Palace, with the King of that time. There in Berlin, people were slowly recovering from the bloody war, most of the houses were in rubbles and the remaining were badly destroyed. After the second world war, the center of world power shifted largely from Western Europe to the USA and the USSR. Cold war and possiblity of nuclear war followed. Anyway, that was a very good documentary of the war in Europe, I enjoyed it.
