It has been said that some are born with the right qualities and some develop them. Either way, we all eventually find ourselves in a leadership position. We all have an image of a good leader. The challenge is actually living in accordance with those standards. Along my leadership journey I have discovered the following works for me. - Select good role models. Observer them and check yourself against them. -Change role models as your expectations of yourself change. -Have a mentor. Let your mentor know how he or she is helping you. -Be a mentor to others, even when they do not know it. -Have a confidante, someone other than your mentor. -Seek the input of others before making a decision. -See the difference between being a Team Leader and a Team Player. -Be driven by principle. Remember it is not who is right that is important but what is right. -Admit error quickly and be receptive to criticism. -Practice empathy and forgive as quickly as possible. -Ask for help when you need it. -Give constructive feedback. -Reward and recognize others. -Be committed to your responsibilities. -Develop a Plan then work the Plan. -Be the best you can be in everything you do. -Reflect on your past and learn from it. -Never panic and don't faint.
