Sir, I wonder at your condemnation of King Gyanendra?s ?coup? in Nepal (leading article, February 2). While it is reasonable to be alarmed at the removal of a Government in a nation still unused to democracy, perhaps a strong government set above fragile factions is the best means of combating the Maoist insurgency in Nepal and ensuring the long-term future of democratic government. As Western governments have recently been keen to point out, democracy is sometimes best defended by apparently illiberal means, especially where it is threatened by armed opponents. As King Gyanendra is committed to restore democratic government in due course, I venture to suggest that the Nepalese people may find themselves able to enjoy the fruits of democracy more securely in future as a result of this action. Yours sincerely, ALEX LEE, The Dower House, 83 West Avenue, Handsworth Wood, Birmingham B20 2LY. February 2.
